Kia ora!
There’s something truly special about New Zealanders, their warm hospitality, and their beautiful country. The friendliness and genuine care that Kiwis extend to visitors is unmatched. If you are transiting for a few hours or overnight then the Pullman hotel right next to the airport is a fantastic choice. It is within walking distance from the terminal – you can literally roll your suitcases over with you.
Flying with Air New Zealand is like experiencing a piece of the country’s heart in the sky; the crew’s warmth and professionalism make every journey feel like a continuation of the country’s welcoming spirit. Whether on the ground or in the air, New Zealanders have a way of making you feel right at home.
When it comes to pre-flight relaxation, the Air New Zealand Koru Lounge in Auckland stands out as an exceptional space for travellers looking to unwind before their journey. Whether you’re a Koru Club member, a business class passenger, or flying with one of Air New Zealand’s partner airlines, the lounge offers a serene and luxurious environment that goes beyond the typical airport experience.
Accessing the Air New Zealand Business Lounge in Auckland
My journey to the Koru Lounge began with a business class flight on board the A350-1000 with Cathay Pacific.
Cathay Pacific has a strategic alliance agreement with Air New Zealand and utilizes the Air New Zealand Koru Lounge in Auckland for its passengers. It provides them with access to one of the finest lounges in the region.
Having secured my business class seat on Cathay Pacific through the strategic use of my Qantas Frequent Flyer points, I was eager to experience what the Koru Lounge had to offer. I checked in for my flight to Hong Kong and onwards to Dubai with Emirates. One of the best things of code sharing and airline alliance partners, is you dont have to worry about rechecking your bags on connecting flights. You can literally jump from lounge to lounge and enjoy the journey without the added stress.
Just follow the signs through the airport labelled ” Air New Zealand Lounge” until you reach the elevator. Go up to the lounge level and you will be greeted at the entrance.
First Impressions: Spacious and Welcoming
Upon entering the Koru Lounge, I was immediately struck by the spaciousness of the area. The lounge is designed to accommodate a large number of passengers without ever feeling crowded, thanks to its well-thought-out layout.
Multiple seating areas cater to different needs, whether you’re looking to relax in a cozy armchair, get some work done at one of the many workstations, or enjoy a meal at a dining table. The design is modern yet comfortable, with warm tones and ample natural light flooding through large windows that offer breathtaking views of the runway.
Culinary Delights: A Taste of New Zealand
One of the highlights of my visit was the culinary experience. Arriving at exactly 12:00 midday, I was in for a treat as the lounge began cooking their local specialty of fresh crayfish tails. The scent of freshly prepared seafood filled the air, and it was clear that this was a much-anticipated event, as the queue quickly grew. Despite the number of people, the efficient service and large batches of crayfish ensured that the wait was minimal. New Zealand’s crayfish, often referred to as the “champagne of lobster,” is known for its light, sweet, and rich taste, with a firm flesh that makes it a true delicacy. This experience alone set the Koru Lounge apart from other airport lounges I’ve visited. I love local culture on display for the world to experience.
Beyond the crayfish, the lounge offers an impressive buffet with a variety of hot and cold dishes that cater to all tastes. From fresh salads to hearty mains, and a selection of desserts, there’s something to satisfy every craving.
The food is of excellent quality, reflecting New Zealand’s reputation for fresh and flavourful ingredients.
The Beverage Experience: Bars and Baristas
The beverage selection at the Koru Lounge is equally impressive. There are multiple bars throughout the lounge where you can order a cocktail or a glass of wine, and for those who prefer something non-alcoholic, there are plenty of options as well. One of the standout features is the barista service, where you can get a freshly brewed cup of coffee made to your liking. Whether you’re in the mood for a flat white, a cappuccino, or just a simple espresso, the skilled baristas have you covered. The lounge’s commitment to providing top-notch coffee is a nod to New Zealand’s strong coffee culture, and it’s a perfect way to kickstart your journey.
Runway Views and Relaxation Areas
The Koru Lounge is designed to be a peaceful retreat, and nowhere is this more evident than in the areas with stunning views of the runway. Large windows allow you to watch the planes take off and land, adding a sense of excitement and anticipation to your travel experience. Whether you’re an aviation enthusiast or just someone who enjoys the view, this aspect of the lounge is sure to delight.
There are also several relaxation areas throughout the lounge, including quieter zones where you can rest or even take a nap. Comfortable seating, soft lighting, and a calm atmosphere make these spaces ideal for unwinding before a long flight.
Kids Corner
For those traveling with children, the Koru Lounge also features a dedicated kids’ corner, ensuring that the little ones are entertained while you relax.
Amenities: Showers and Toilets
One of the most appreciated amenities in the Koru Lounge is the availability of showers. After or even before a long journey or before a long-haul flight, a refreshing shower can make all the difference. I had a few very long flights ahead of me travelling to the greek island of Amorgos, with a few legs to hop off and on, so this made an enormous difference to me.
The shower facilities in the Koru Lounge are clean, well-maintained, and stocked with premium toiletries, allowing you to freshen up in comfort. The toilets are also spotless, reflecting the high standards of cleanliness maintained throughout the lounge.
A Perfect Pre-Flight Experience
My time at the Air New Zealand Koru Lounge in Auckland was nothing short of exceptional. From the spacious and well-appointed areas to the outstanding food and beverage offerings, every aspect of the lounge is designed to enhance your pre-flight experience. The fresh crayfish tails at midday were a particular highlight, offering a taste of New Zealand’s finest seafood that I won’t soon forget.
For travelers flying with Cathay Pacific or any of Air New Zealand’s partner airlines, the Koru Lounge in Auckland is an absolute must-visit. It’s not just a place to pass the time before your flight; it’s an integral part of your journey that sets the tone for the luxury and comfort to come. Whether you’re relaxing with a cocktail, savouring a gourmet meal, or simply enjoying the view of the runway, the Koru Lounge offers a level of service and quality that is second to none.
And if you have mastered the points game and have managed lounges and business or first class cabins for free, then you would appreciate that this is the most rewarding part.
Safe travels!
