During my recent business trip to Europe, I had the incredible opportunity to combine work and leisure by adding a three-day escapade to the enchanting Greek Island of Astypalaia, also referred to as the Butterfly Shaped Island of Greece.
Being an avid traveler and a nature lover, I was drawn to this particular island for its pristine beauty and its commitment to being eco-friendly. The Greek island Astypalaia, or otherwise written Astypalea, has gained a reputation for its sustainable practices and emphasis on preserving the environment. As someone who values sustainability and appreciates destinations that prioritize eco-consciousness, this island was a perfect fit for my bleisure experience.
Getting there is easy. Sky Express offers a couple flights a day directly from Athens. The duration is around 55 minutes.
There is an abundance of astypalaia accommodation options catering to every individual’s preferences. Among them, I opted for the remarkable Grande Mar Suites, offering awe-inspiring views of this captivating island. Operated by a warm-hearted family, their local hosts go above and beyond to ensure your stay is nothing short of welcoming and enjoyable.
A Smart Island
One of the factors that intrigued me about the Greek Island Astypalaia, is that it has a program to be the first “smart” island that runs almost entirely in green energy. It includes an initiative to encourage a smoke-free environment. As a non-smoker, I appreciated the island’s efforts to create a healthy and clean atmosphere for both residents and visitors. It aligned with my own values and added an extra layer of appeal to my decision to explore Astypalaia. I was excited to support a destination that cared about the well-being of its inhabitants and the preservation of its natural surroundings.
Arriving in Astypalaia, I was immediately captivated by its breathtaking landscapes, a combination of crystal-clear waters, and picturesque villages. The island’s commitment to sustainability was evident everywhere. Exploring Astypalaia island on foot, bicycle or their electric cars allowed me to fully appreciate its untouched beauty while minimizing my carbon footprint.
Local Cuisine
During my three-day stay, I indulged in astypalea island’s local cuisine, savouring fresh seafood and traditional Greek dishes made from locally sourced ingredients. The island’s commitment to sustainability extended to its gastronomy, with many restaurants offering organic and farm-to-table options. I relished every meal, knowing that I was supporting local businesses that valued sustainable practices. A couple of great mentions are:
Parathinalos Restaurant which sits right on the water and serves up an unforgettable octopus pasta dish. Their Masticha liquer which they serve at the end is magnificent. A wonderful, friendly service.
Gerani restaurant cooks some of the best traditional Greek dishes. You even get to see the locals make them from scratch.
Both of these restaurants were a quick 5–7-minute drive from our accommodation. You can either opt to rent a car (preferably electric) or grab a cab to drive you there and back. Don’t forget about the electric ride sharing shuttle that is available on the island. Its an on demand shuttle service called astyMOVE and you can easily download the astybus app.
Alternatively you could walk them both in approximately 20 minutes.
Cultural Experience
Beyond the eco-friendly aspects, Astypalaia island in Greece offered a rich cultural experience. I spent my days wandering through the narrow, whitewashed streets of Chora, the island’s main town, discovering charming shops, historical sites, and friendly locals eager to share stories about their island.
As part of the package deal offered by Grande mar suites, I also had the opportunity to take a full day yacht trip to surrounding uninhabited islands. I took in the tranquillity and serenity that Astypalaia offered.
I have never encountered such turquoise untouched waters in my life. This was paradise on earth.
As my time on astypalea island came to an end, I felt a sense of fulfillment and rejuvenation. By combining business with this eco-friendly bleisure experience, I not only managed to accomplish my work goals but also had the opportunity to connect with nature, support a sustainable destination, and immerse myself in a unique cultural experience.
Conclusion
My bleisure trip to the Greek Island Astypalaia, was an unforgettable experience that perfectly blended work and pleasure. The island’s eco-friendly practices, including the smoke-free environment and running on electric cars resonated with my values and enhanced my journey. Astypalaia’s commitment to sustainability, stunning landscapes, and welcoming culture made it the ideal destination to unwind and recharge after my business endeavors in Europe. It served as a reminder that with careful planning (including a comprehensive travel packing list!) and an open mindset, work trips can transform into extraordinary adventures.
Getting to Europe from Australia is certainly long but easy. I’ve managed to do this for free, part business class and part first class and using my favourite airlines was a bonus. But before heading back home there is just one more stop – the Big Blue island of Amorgos. Just a quick blue star ferry ride from Astypalaia.
Then to deal with the jet lag!🥴
