Batik Air cabin baggage is usually 7 kg, while checked baggage ranges from 0–25 kg in economy and up to 40 kg in business depending on fare.
Batik Air (previously Malindo Air) is part of the Lion Air Group and operates as a full service carrier out of Malaysia. I’ve flown with them several times, including when they were still Malindo Air, and learned quickly that baggage rules on this airline can be both generous and strict. Staff really do weigh carry on at Kuala Lumpur, so it pays to know the rules before you get to the airport.
Here’s a quick guide to what you can and can’t bring on board Batik Air.

Checked in Baggage Batik Air – Malaysia:
Here’s a general guide to Batik Air’s checked-in free baggage allowances:
Batik Air FREE Baggage Allowance (Checked-in):
| Fare Type | Cabin Class | Free Checked Baggage Allowance |
|---|---|---|
| Business | Business Class | 40 kg |

It’s advisable to visit Batik Air’s website for precise details, including all destinations, minor allowances and the fine print. The site also provides information on pre-purchasing additional baggage at specific rates. Keep in mind that failure to pre-purchase may result in charges at the airport, and these charges can be substantial. For example, exceeding weight limits on a flight from Australia to Malaysia might incur a fee of AUD$20 per kg over the limit.
Furthermore you could have further complications if you have to recheck bags on a connecting flight – especially if they are seperate airlines and seperate tickets that cannot be tagged all the way through to your final destination.
It’s essential to note that even if your business class allowance is 40 kg, individual suitcases cannot exceed 32 kg each, as no carrier typically accepts luggage exceeding this weight limit. For detailed information, you can refer to the official Batik Air website as mentioned above.

When determining your luggage allowance, it’s crucial to be aware of the type of ticket you’ve purchased, as cheaper tickets often come with more restrictive allowances. Additionally, destination plays a role, as specific routes, such as those to Melbourne, may have varying baggage allowances across different classes. For instance, business class to Melbourne may have a lower allowance compared to economy flexi, but more than super saver.
My Experience Flying Batik Air
Before the rebrand, I flew Malindo (now Batik Air) from Singapore to Kuala Lumpur and then on to Phuket. I love Phuket, I stay at the Dusit Thani Laguna Pool Villa almost every year. In Business Class, I sat in seat 1A, which was spacious and far better than I expected on a short haul flight. The service was warm, meals were tasty, and the 12 seat Business cabin felt private and comfortable.

On another trip, I watched staff at KLIA weighing nearly every cabin bag before boarding. Several passengers had to pay fees because their “7kg” roller bag was over the limit. Lesson learned: don’t assume you can sneak a heavier bag through. Batik is generous but strict.
Best Seats on Batik Air – Malaysia
For those not opting for business class, here are the recommended seats in economy. These are seats at the front of the cabin that have extra leg room. They are also great because you get served first and you also get to disembark the aircraft first. They are great for travellers who suffer from a bit of travel anxiety and are less claustrophobic than the rest of the economy cabin.
For a family travelling with kids or babies these rows also offer bassinet seats.
Just check which aircraft you are flying and note the following seats. To check which aircraft you are flying refer to their website. It should be under the flight details. If it isn’t then take note of the flight number and head on over to flightaware.com and search it there. You will see historical data on what aircraft is used on this particular flight.
Another way is to view the seat map when you go through your booking. This would be after you have entered your personal details and come to seat selection.
- Boeing 737-8 (single cabin): Row 1 (Note: 1C and 1D are Bassinet Seats)
- Boeing 737-8 (dual cabin): Row 4 (Note: 4C and 4D are Bassinet Seats)
- A330 wide body (dual cabin): Row 7 (Note: 7CGK are Bassinet Seats) and Row 35 for exit row seats.
