While it may not be as large as botanical gardens found in bigger cities, the Katapola botanical garden is a lovely place to visit if you’re interested in nature, gardening, or simply looking for a quiet retreat on the island. There’s a spot for everyone here. A wonderful place to meet people if you are a solo traveler.
I discovered this place whilst on a bleisure trip to the Greek island of Amorgos last year.
Both the island and this beautiful little garden are the true meaning of relaxation and serenity.
How to Get There
The garden is located in Katapola, one of the main ports of Amorgos. You can easily reach it by following the signs from the harbor.
- By Foot: If you’re staying in Katapola, it’s just a 10-15 minute walk from the harbor.
- By Car or Scooter: If you’re staying elsewhere on the island, you can drive or ride a scooter to Katapola. There’s parking near the garden.
- By Bus: Local buses connect Katapola with other parts of Amorgos, so getting there by public transport is easy.
On your way up to the garden, you’ll pass a small shop that sells herbs grown right in the garden. It’s a great place to pick up some fresh or dried herbs, essential oils, and other natural products.

Accommodation in Katapola, Amorgos – Eleni on the Beach
One of the only places located right on the beach and just 200 metres from the hustle of the port and centre. I couldn’t resist but go back this year.
The accommodation in Katapola, Amorgos I stayed at was a beachfront spot called Eleni on the Beach. It’s a place that captures the essence of authentic Cycladic heritage, with a simplicity that feels like stepping back into the 1980s—but it’s been fully renovated and is such a beautiful little spot. The hosts are incredibly welcoming, creating a warm and inclusive environment for solo travellers and people from all backgrounds. During my few weeks there, I had the pleasure of making many new friends, and by the end of our stay, we were all already planning our return for next year. It was at this very place that I was made aware of the botanical garden in Katapola. We spent countless evenings relaxing in the beautiful gardens whilst the founding locals entertained us with something different through the summer nights.
Getting to Amorgos
The Greek Island of Amorgos is off the beaten path that few know about. You dont need much when you get here – life is so simple yet so fulfilling. Ensure you pack light.
As a points enthusiast I am able to travel for free every year – yes even in first class and business class. My trip from Melbourne is a long one but I ensure I get a free stopover in Dubai to break the journey.
Once in Athens, I hop onto the hellenic seaways highspeed 4 and in a few hours I arrive in the port of Katapola.
