When it comes to long haul flights, comfort becomes everything.
After years of travelling through airports, sitting on overnight flights and dealing with cold aircraft cabins, I have become very particular about what I wear when I travel. One thing I almost always take with me during winter trips is a good pair of Australian made UGG boots.
But can you actually wear UGG boots on a plane?
The answer is yes… although there are a few things most travellers do not realise until they start travelling with them regularly.
Some people swear by them for long haul flights and airport comfort. Others still think they should never leave the house.
Funny enough, this debate has existed in Australia for years. Are UGG boots indoor slippers or proper outdoor footwear? Aussies still can’t agree. Right up there with that debate is another classic question. Should you wear them with socks or without socks?
The truth is, a high quality pair of Australian made sheepskin boots can be incredibly comfortable for long haul travel, winter holidays and airport transits. But not all UGG boots are made the same, and there are a few important things travellers should know before buying a pair.

Are UGG Boots Good for Long Haul Flights?
Honestly, yes.
Aircraft cabins and airports can become surprisingly cold during long haul and overnight flights particularly on routes between Australia, Europe, and North America. A comfortable pair of Australian made sheepskin boots can make a huge difference when your body is tired, your feet are swollen and you are trying to get comfortable after ten hours in the air.
Comfort becomes even more important on ultra long haul flights, especially overnight services on aircraft like the Emirates flight from Melbourne to Dubai.
They are warm without feeling heavy and are easy to slip on and off. They feel softer than rigid sneakers and far more comfortable than tight leather shoes after sitting for long periods.
For overnight flights especially, I find them ideal.
That said, I usually do not wear them through the airport itself.
Why I Pack My UGG Boots in My Carry On Bag

My sheepskin boots have become one of those winter travel essentials I almost automatically pack for long haul trips. In fact, I even include them in my ultimate travel packing list.
When travelling, I usually wear my R.M.Williams boots through the airport. Yes, I am a fan. They are comfortable, Australian made and, in my opinion, unmatched when it comes to craftsmanship. I keep my sheepskin boots packed inside my carry on luggage instead.
The reason is partly practical and partly very Australian.
Best UGG Boots to Pack for Travel

For travel, I prefer lower cut (just above the ankle) sheepskin styles because they are easier to pack, easier to slip on, take up less room in carry on luggage and are perfect once onboard during long haul flights or later at the hotel. They are designed more for comfort and warmth than heavy walking support, which is the reason I prefer wearing proper boots or walking shoes through airports and long terminals instead.
But there is another reason too.
Airport Lounge Dress Codes and UGG Boots
In Australia, UGG boots have traditionally been viewed as house slippers rather than everyday outdoor footwear, and that mindset still exists in some places today. In fact, lounges operated by Qantas specifically reference UGG boots under clothing items considered inappropriate for entry and group them under what the airline refers to as “sleepwear”.

Very Australian, honestly.
Personally, I think context and how they are styled matters too. A neat pair worn with black jeans and a quality wool knit can look perfectly smart casual and presentable for travel.
If you regularly travel through premium lounges like the Emirates Lounge or the Turkish Airlines Business Lounge, it is worth quickly checking dress standards before travelling in UGG boots.
Even today, Australians still debate whether UGG boots belong indoors or outdoors.
Once I am onboard or settled in for a long-haul flight, comfort and warmth win every time. And for the hotel room, an absolute must.
After enough long haul trips, you quickly realise that small comfort items can make a huge difference during travel.
Why Australian Made UGG Boots Matter
As an Australian, I will always try to support Australian made products where possible, and that absolutely includes sheepskin boots.
The problem is that finding genuinely Australian made UGG boots has become much harder over the years because the market can be very misleading.
Many products heavily advertise phrases like:
• “Australian Sheepskin”
• “Designed in Australia”
• “Australian style”
…but that does not necessarily mean the boots were actually made in Australia.
In many cases, the products may still be fully manufactured overseas.
Even the term “Australian sheepskin” can sometimes be difficult for consumers to verify. Unless there is proper transparency from the manufacturer, most buyers would have no realistic way of confirming where the sheepskin actually came from.
If supporting Australian made products matters to you, it is perfectly reasonable to ask questions and request clarification before purchasing.
Why Australian Made Matters Beyond Patriotism
For many Australians, supporting local manufacturing is about far more than just patriotism.
It also comes down to quality, accountability and keeping skills alive locally.
Supporting Local Businesses
Buying Australian made sheepskin boots helps support local manufacturers and smaller Australian businesses rather than only overseas mass production. Small businesses are the backbone of the economy. It’s a win-win for all.
Better Accountability
When products are made locally, there is often greater accountability around quality control, materials and customer support.
If something goes wrong, dealing with a local business is usually far easier than trying to deal with an overseas seller or manufacturer.
Stronger Consumer Protection
When you buy from an Australian business, you are generally dealing with local consumer laws, clearer warranty processes and customer support that is easier to access if something goes wrong with the product.
Supporting Australian Jobs
Local manufacturing helps support Australian workers, trades and skills that have gradually disappeared from many industries over the years.
Craftsmanship Often Feels Different
This one is hard to explain until you have worn both.
Well made Australian sheepskin boots often feel more substantial, more supportive and better constructed overall. Small details like stitching quality, wool density, heel support and sole construction can make a noticeable difference over time.
Of course, not every imported product is poor quality and not every Australian made product is perfect. But personally, when it comes to something I wear regularly during travel, comfort and durability matter enough that I would rather invest in a properly made pair.
I have had my current pair for well over 10 years and they have seen airports, aircraft cabins, hotel rooms, winter streets and even washing machines. The fact they are still going strong today says a lot about the craftsmanship and quality that can still be found in a well made pair of Australian ugg boots.
If you are specifically looking for Australian made sheepskin products, the Australian Sheepskin Association Manufacturer Directory is a good place to start.
The list focuses on manufacturers and may not include retailers or brands that source their boots from Australian manufacturers, so it should be viewed as a starting point rather than a complete list of every Australian made option available.
How to Choose Good Quality UGG Boots
At first glance, many sheepskin boots online look almost identical. But once you start wearing them regularly, especially during travel, the differences become obvious very quickly.
Good sheepskin boots come down to materials and construction quality.
There are a few things I always look for.
1. Australian Sheepskin and A Grade Materials
Good quality Australian sheepskin feels very different from lower grade materials.
Merino cross breeds are ideal for footwear. They are softer, denser, more breathable and generally far more comfortable during long wear. One of the reasons you will love genuine sheepskin as a traveller is because it naturally regulates temperature well. Your feet stay warm without becoming excessively sweaty.
One very important thing to look for is double faced sheepskin.
Double faced sheepskin means the wool and suede are one natural piece from the same hide. In other words, the inner wool and the outer suede are organically connected as one material.
This matters because there are products on the market that use lower quality methods, including gluing suede onto cheap sheepskin or even attaching synthetic materials underneath while still marketing the product as “sheepskin”.
A proper double faced sheepskin boot generally feels:
✔️more natural
✔️more breathable
✔️more durable
✔️softer over time
✔️better at regulating temperature
Cheap synthetic linings or lower quality wool often flatten quickly and lose their softness after heavy use.
2. Manufacturing Quality Matters
A good quality pair usually comes down to the small details, including:
• double faced sheepskin
• stitching quality
• thread strength
• glue durability
• reinforced binding
• sole construction and density
• cushioned sheepskin innersoles
• proper moulded heel support
• the use of proper lasts to help shape the boots correctly, especially around the toe area
These are the details that often separate a pair that lasts one or two winters from a pair that can last for many years and affect comfort, durability and how long the boots hold their shape.
A poorly made pair may look fine initially but collapse quickly once used heavily during travel or winter walking.
3. The Innersole Matters More Than People Think
A good innersole can completely change how comfortable sheepskin boots feel during travel.
Ideally, the bottom lining should be thick and soft genuine sheepskin, but it becomes even better when combined with cushioning materials such as Ortholite.
A supportive cushioned innersole paired with a well-constructed sole can provide exceptional comfort during:
• airport walking
• long flights
• hotel stays
• winter travel
• extended wear throughout the day
When people talk about some boots feeling “cloud like” underfoot, this combination is often the reason why.
4. The Soles Used
Lightweight EVA soles feel soft, flexible and extremely comfortable underfoot. They are excellent for:
• indoor wear
• hotels
• lounges
• relaxing during flights
However, they can wear out more quickly over time with heavy outdoor use.
EVA Rubber soles have more cushioning or “bounce”, are generally more durable and better suited for everyday outdoor walking. They usually provide more support and tend to maintain their shape better during extended use.
Personally, I think lightweight EVA works beautifully for slippers and lighter travel use, while EVA rubber soles are better for travellers planning to wear them both indoors and outdoors.
5. Heel Support Matters More Than People Realise
One of the biggest signs of a lower quality pair is poor heel structure.
Some boots do not have proper moulded heel support. Over time, this can lead to heel slipping, collapsing backs and an unstable fit.
A proper moulded heel support creates a more secure fit around the ankle and heel area while helping the boots maintain their shape over time. Your heel should feel supported rather than constantly slipping up and down while walking.
Internal Heel Construction Matters Too
Good internal heel construction also helps prevent rubbing and friction around the back of the heel, which is one of the biggest causes of discomfort and blisters. This often comes down to the way the inner heel area is finished and stitched. A skilled craftsman knows how to minimise exposed internal stitching and create a smoother, more comfortable fit around the heel.
You will really notice the difference when walking long airport corridors or carrying luggage through terminals.
Are UGG Boots Good for Snow?
This is one of the biggest misconceptions people have about UGG boots.
Because they are warm and designed for winter, many people automatically assume they are ideal for snow and wet weather. The reality is a little different.
Traditional sheepskin UGG boots are generally not waterproof.
Even protective sprays usually only make them water resistant rather than fully waterproof. Snow, slush and rain can still seep through the stitching and eventually drench the boots, especially during extended exposure to wet conditions.
Snow can also leave water marks and staining on the suede if they are not properly protected and dried.
For proper snow travel, I would personally recommend either:
• fully waterproof leather / sheepskin lined designed specifically for snow conditions
• or proper waterproof snow boots or wellies for heavy snow and wet weather
Then once you are finished for the day and back at the hotel, that is when the sheepskin boots become absolute heaven.
After walking around in freezing temperatures all day, slipping into warm sheepskin boots in the hotel room is one of the best feelings during winter travel.
Are UGG Boots Comfortable for Walking?
This really depends on the quality of the boots and how far you plan on walking.
One of the reasons I placed so much emphasis throughout this article on proper heel support, cushioning and construction quality is because it makes an enormous difference once you start wearing sheepskin boots for extended periods.
A good quality pair with supportive soles, proper moulded heel support and cushioned innersoles can feel incredibly comfortable during travel, especially in cold weather.
Personally though, I still would not choose them over a proper pair of walking shoes if I knew I would be walking for hours every day. Sheepskin boots are designed more for comfort and warmth than serious walking support.
For shorter distances, airport lounges, flights, hotels and winter travel, I think they are fantastic. Especially when the weather is extremely cold.
Should You Wear Socks With UGG Boots?
This is probably one of the oldest UGG boot debates in Australia.
Personally, no, I do not normally wear mine with socks unless I am flying long haul and wearing compression socks.
I prefer getting the full benefit of the lanolin, warmth and breathability directly against the skin. Once you wear thick socks, you lose a lot of that natural sheepskin comfort experience.
Over time the innersoles will eventually flatten, especially if the boots are heavily used. When that happens, I simply replace the innersoles and keep going. A good quality pair can last an incredibly long time with proper care.
Mine certainly have.
What Is a Toe Burst in UGG Boots?
💡 One Small Tip That Makes a Big Difference
Trim your toenails.
It sounds simple, but it matters more than people realise.
One of the most common causes of lining damage inside sheepskin boots is overly long toenails. Over time they can wear through the wool lining and create what many people call toe bursts.
Keeping toenails trimmed helps preserve the lining and extend the life of the boots significantly.
Frequently Asked Questions
This is where things become confusing.
The term “UGG boots” originated in Australia and has been used in Australia for decades to describe sheepskin boots in general.
For many Australians, UGG boots are considered quintessentially Australian. A little like champagne is associated with France or feta with Greece, UGG boots have long been part of Australian culture and winter life.
Some are and some are not.
There are still manufacturers producing genuine Australian made sheepskin boots locally, but many products sold worldwide under the UGG name are manufactured overseas.
Phrases such as “Australian sheepskin” or “Designed in Australia” and “Australian style”, do not necessarily mean the boots were made in Australia.
If Australian manufacturing matters to you, it is worth checking carefully before buying.
The easiest way is to look for businesses that clearly state:
• Made in Australia
• Australian owned
• Australian manufactured
…and are transparent about where the products are produced.
The Australian Sheepskin Association is one place worth starting if you are specifically looking for Australian made sheepskin products.
Many people will tell you never to put sheepskin boots in the washing machine, whilst others will tell you there’s no problem in doing so.
Personally, I have washed mine carefully for years without problems. I use:
• a cold wool wash cycle
• a couple of drops of baby shampoo inside each boot
• no harsh detergents
• no heat
After washing, I stuff them with towels to help maintain their shape and allow them to dry naturally inside the house for several days. Once fully dry, I gently brush the wool using a rubber pet brush to help bring back the softness and plush feel, especially around the footbed. Very important:
• no dryer
• no direct sun
• no heater
• no forcing them to dry quickly
Rushing the drying process can damage the suede and harden the sheepskin.
For oil spots or marks, one surprisingly effective trick is ordinary chalk. Rub chalk gently over the affected area, leave it for a couple of hours to absorb the oil or stain, then gently brush it off using a rubber pet brush.
Again, always proceed carefully because different materials and finishes can react differently to cleaning methods.
Final Thoughts
So, are UGG boots good for flights and travel?
For many travellers, absolutely.
If you are ever stuck on what to buy someone who travels regularly, a good quality pair of Australian made sheepskin boots can make an incredibly practical and thoughtful travel gift. I actually included them in my list of the best gifts for travellers for exactly that reason.
They may not suit every destination or every style of travel, but for overnight flights, cold cabins, winter trips and long airport days, a good pair of Australian sheepskin boots can be incredibly comfortable.
The key is choosing the right pair.
Good Australian sheepskin, proper construction quality, supportive soles and strong heel support all make a noticeable difference. Once you wear a well made pair during a long haul trip, it becomes very easy to understand why so many travellers keep going back to them.
And whether you wear them with socks or without socks is entirely up to you.
One final travel tip. Keep the UGG boots on.
Few things divide a cabin faster than passengers walking around barefoot on a long haul flight.
