As a frequent traveller, I’m always on the lookout for unique or cool features onboard airlines – whether it’s something that makes a long flight more comfortable, a tiny detail that makes a big difference or an innovative addition that changes the entire flying experience. By unique, I mean features that either no other airline has or very few have. And it’s not just about the onboard experience; I’m also fascinated by exclusive airline lounges or even onboard amenities. Here’s a roundup of some of the coolest airline features that make flying an experience to remember.
1. Emirates Virtual Window & Video Calling (Gamechanger First Class)
Emirates has taken privacy and luxury to new heights with its virtual window in the Gamechanger First Class. Passengers in the middle row suites with no actual window can still enjoy stunning views of the outside, thanks to this virtual display that projects the outside in real-time. That means no more worrying about getting stuck in the middle row😊
Furthermore, their intercom/video calling system lets you communicate directly with the crew, a convenient feature for ensuring every space traveller feels comfortable and safe.
You can find these features on board the first class cabin on Emirates 777-300 Game Changer. But with only a handful of these beauties in the air you have to know the Emirates game changer routes.

2. Emirates A380 Onboard Bar and Shower
The Emirates A380 is known for its luxury, and the onboard bar and shower are iconic features that are hard to beat. First-class passengers can enjoy a refreshing shower mid-flight, while both first and business class passengers can unwind at the bar, enjoying a cocktail or snack while socializing with fellow passengers. It’s the perfect way to make any flight feel like an exclusive event especially on the non-stop flights which can get over 14 hours. Available on board the Emirates Airbus A380.
Other airlines that offer onboard bar are Qatar, Korean Air, Etihad and Virgin Atlantic. The only other airline to offer an onboard shower is Etihad inside “the residence”.

3. Singapore Airlines – Double Beds in Suite Class (A380)
Onboard Singapore Airlines’ A380, passengers flying in Suite Class are in for a treat: double beds in the sky! These spacious, fully enclosed suites provide the ultimate in comfort and luxury. Ideal for couples or anyone who prefers to sleep in style, the double bed comes with everything you’d expect from a five-star hotel, including premium bedding, personal service, desks and plenty of space. There are also two armchairs and two tv’s.

4. Etihad Airways – The Residence: A Private, Three-Room Suite
Flying Etihad Airways? Their ‘The Residence’ is nothing short of extraordinary. This three-room suite includes a living room, bedroom, and an ensuite shower. What’s more, a personal butler is always on hand to provide bespoke service. It’s essentially a flying apartment that offers an unparalleled level of luxury that no other airline can match.

5. Qatar Airways Companion Suite (Next-Gen QSuites)
Qatar Airways’ Next Gen QSuites revolutionized business class, and their upcoming companion suite is set to raise the bar even higher. They are set to launch in 2025. This feature will allow passengers traveling together to enjoy a more intimate experience, with fully enclosed suites that can be joined for a shared space – wait for it…next to the window! Yes, this companion suite is a window suite, so no more being stuck in the middle seats/suites if you are travelling in twos! Furthermore their Quad Suites are set to be a completely open plan for family and friends alike.

6. Lufthansa Allegris – Cooling and Heating Seats
Lufthansa’s Allegris seating in business class features a unique cooling and heating function built right into the seats. This is a game-changer for long-haul flights where passengers are often uncomfortable due to fluctuating cabin temperatures. Whether you need to warm up or cool down, these seats have got you covered. They will be available on the A350 out of Munich and the Boeing 787 out of frankfurt.

7. Japan Airlines (JAL) A350: First and Business Class Speakers in Headrests
Japan Airlines (JAL) enhances your entertainment experience with speakers embedded into the headrests of their A350-1000 first and business class cabins. This feature allows passengers to enjoy in-flight movies and music with a more immersive sound experience, eliminating the need for bulky headphones. Simply amazing.

8. JAL First Class Toilets: Bidet, Pull-Out Seat, and Footrest
When it comes to luxury, JAL goes above and beyond in their first-class toilets. These bathrooms on board JAL A350 1000 feature a bidet, a pull-out seat, and a pull-out footrest, (so your feet don’t touch the toilet floor). Everything is designed with comfort and convenience in mind, making it a noteworthy feature on long-haul flights.
It’s also worth noting that bidets can also be found onboard ANA and Oman Air.

9. Virgin Atlantic’s Super Cool Salt and Pepper Shakers
A quirky and fun feature from Virgin Atlantic is their signature salt and pepper shakers that come with the cheeky message “pinched from Virgin Atlantic” written on the bottom. It’s a playful touch that adds personality to their in-flight dining experience, and it’s a perfect little souvenir for frequent flyers.

10. Air New Zealand Skycouch in Economy Class
Air New Zealand has reimagined the economy class experience with the Skycouch, which allows a row of three seats to be converted into a flat surface for sleeping. This feature offers more space and comfort for long-haul flights, making it easier to relax and sleep.

Air New Zealand patented the Skycouch design, which transforms a row of three economy seats into a flat sleeping surface. They have licensed this design to several other airlines, including Azul Brazilian Airlines, Air Austral (France), and Lufthansa. Each of these airlines has given the Skycouch a different name:
- Azul Brazilian Airlines: Skysofa
- Air Austral: Extra Couchette
- Lufthansa: Sleeper Row
These versions of the Skycouch are similar in concept but may differ slightly in implementation depending on the airline.
11. Air New Zealand Skynest (Coming in 2025)
Air New Zealand is making waves with its Skynest, the world’s first economy class bunk beds. Set to debut in mid 2025 on board its brand new 787-9’s, this feature will allow passengers to sleep in a bed instead of sitting upright for the entire flight, providing a whole new level of comfort in economy class.

12. Qantas A350-1000 Wellbeing Zone for Economy Class
Qantas has introduced a Wellbeing Zone on their Project Sunrise A350-1000, designed to help economy class passengers feel more comfortable and less fatigued. This space is perfect for moving around and stretching during long flights, and it’s a forward-thinking feature that’s sure to become a standard on future aircraft. It is set to launch in 2026 and their ambitious flights include Sydney to London and Sydney to New York non stop.
Its worth noting that like Qantas, Air New Zealand has also introduced a well-being zone that offers a dedicated area for economy class passengers to stretch, move, and relax during the flight.

13. Turkish Airlines – Onboard Chefs on Long-Haul Flights
On long-haul flights, Turkish Airlines brings something extra to business class: professional chefs onboard. These chefs take meal orders, offer recommendations, and prepare fresh meals during the flight, making dining an experience to look forward to. You will find them on board their long haul flights.
It’s worth noting that only a handful of other airlines have onboard chefs. These are Austrian Airlines, Garuda Indonesia, and Saudia.
Furthermore, Turkish Airlines’ Business Class Lounge at Istanbul Airport is one of my absolute favorites. It’s a vibrant showcase of Turkish culture, offering everything from authentic cuisine—like freshly made gözleme and rich lentil soup—to elegant design and warm hospitality. The lounge perfectly complements the airline’s inflight experience, making every part of the journey unforgettable. This lounge is a burst of culture.

14. Scoot’s Scoot-in-Silence Zone
Scoot, the low-cost carrier from Singapore Airlines, offers a Scoot-in-Silence Zone in their economy class. This child-free, quiet section of the cabin is perfect for passengers who prefer a more peaceful environment, especially on long-haul flights. It’s a great idea for anyone seeking a bit more tranquillity during their flight. Available on their Boeing 787 Dreamliner.
