There are moments in travel that quietly change how you experience flying.
The Emirates A380 first class shower is one of them.
On the Emirates A380, First Class passengers can step into a private shower spa while cruising at 40,000 feet. Real hot water. Heated floors. Luxury toiletries. And even a TV monitor showing your live flight progress, reminding you that you are still in the sky.
And even though this product is more than ten years old, it still feels unbelievable.
For many people, it is about the novelty. The story. The bucket list moment of saying you showered on a plane. And there is nothing wrong with that, because it is genuinely one of the coolest onboard features you will find at 40,000 feet.
But once you have done it, you may realise what I did. You do not actually need to do it again. It is an experience; and for me, it is something I was grateful to try, but not something I feel compelled to repeat.
Here’s what the Emirates A380 shower is really like, how it works, who can use it, and whether it is actually worth doing.

What is the Emirates A380 Shower?
The Emirates A380 shower is a private shower spa available only on Emirates Airbus A380 aircraft that feature a First Class cabin.
☞ Not all A380s have First Class.
☞ And Emirates Boeing 777 aircraft do not offer showers.
On every Emirates A380 with First Class, there are two shower suites, located at the very front of the upper deck, one on each side of the staircase.
They are dual purpose First Class bathrooms. When they are not reserved for showers, they function as normal toilets. When a passenger books a shower, that bathroom is locked and becomes a private shower suite, which is why no one else can use it during that time.
Who Can Use the Emirates A380 Shower?
The shower is strictly for First Class passengers. Each passenger is entitled to one shower per flight.
How the Shower Time Works
You can spend up to thirty minutes inside the shower suite. However, you only get five minutes of running water.
The limit is the water, not the room.
You can turn the water on and off as often as you like. The timer shows three zones.
🟢 Green means plenty of water left
🟡 Yellow means time to finish
🔴 Red means the water stops automatically
You press the button to restart if you still have water remaining.

Reserving the Emirates A380 First Class Shower
Shower reservations are handled onboard.
A crew member will usually come by before take-off or shortly after and ask if you would like to book a time.
The most popular window is within two hours of landing, so if you want that slot, reserve early.
Availability depends on how full First Class is, how long the flight is, and what time you prefer. On long haul flights, there is more flexibility. On shorter flights, reserve immediately.
Skywards elite members may receive priority.
Inside the Shower Spa
Each shower spa includes:
- Toilet
- Sink with vanity mirror
- Enclosed shower
- Bench
- Adjustable heated floors
- TV monitor with live flight map
Amenities include:
- VOYA toiletries
- VOYA hand soap
- BVLGARI fragrances
- Dental kits
- Shaving kits
- Cotton swabs
- Hair dryer
- Tote bag to carry your items
It genuinely feels like a luxury hotel bathroom in the sky.

How the Shower Actually Works
There are a few things that surprise first time users.
☞ The shower will not run unless the door is fully latched closed.
☞ The timer shows how much water remains.
☞ You can press the stop/start button as many times as you like to pause the water
☞ When the red zone is reached, the water stops automatically.
☞ Water pressure is strong.
☞ The temperature adjusts quickly.
☞ There is an oxygen mask inside for emergencies.
Safety During Turbulence
If turbulence occurs while you are inside the shower:
⚠️ Sit on the bench and hold onto the rail.
⚠️ If you are in the main area, hold the rail under the sink.
⚠️ There is no seatbelt.
⚠️ You do not need to return to your seat unless instructed.
Why Some Shower Suites Look Different
There are two main design styles.
Older A380s
Light finishes
Dubai skyline artwork

Newer or retrofitted A380s
Darker tones
Ghaf tree motif
This reflects Emirates cabin refresh and Premium Economy retrofit program.

My experience was with the older A380.
The First Class Bar Transformation
Opposite the shower suites is the First Class self service bar.
On long haul flights, a few hours before landing, the bar is removed and replaced with a relaxing water display, creating a calm, spa like atmosphere.
This is also where I found my ginger and lemongrass tea waiting for me after my shower. A small touch, but it truly completes the experience and makes it feel like a real spa in the sky.

Why Some Travellers Choose to Shower Onboard
While I personally prefer to wait until I reach my hotel, there are very valid reasons why many First Class passengers choose to shower before landing. If you are stepping straight into meetings, attending an event, or transferring to another long haul flight, the ability to freshen up mid air can make a real difference. For others, it is about resetting their body clock, feeling human again after a long flight, or simply enjoying the experience while it is available. In those situations, the Emirates A380 shower is not just a novelty. It is genuinely practical.
What It Feels Like (And Why I Don’t Always Do It)
The Emirates A380 shower has been around for over a decade, yet it still feels surreal the moment you step inside. The one time I used it was on a very long flight from New York to Dubai, when I was connecting onward and did not have time to properly freshen up in the First Class lounge. In that moment, it was not about novelty, but practicality. I had flown the A380 in First Class several times before that and never felt the need to shower onboard.
Since then, I have travelled in Emirates First Class a number of times and have always preferred to wait until I reached my hotel for a proper shower. I also chose not to shower close to landing. I did it around three hours before arrival so I could relax and enjoy the full meal service without stress. The only time I would consider doing it again is if I had to step straight off the aircraft and into meetings or events, with no time to freshen up. That is why this experience feels special to me. Not because it is a must, but because the choice is there.
For me, arriving well is less about what happens on the aircraft and more about how I recover from jet lag once I land.
Final Words
You do not need to shower on a plane to feel well travelled. The Emirates A380 shower is a remarkable feature, but it is not a requirement. It exists for moments when it truly adds value, not for every journey. Understanding that is what makes this experience feel mature rather than indulgent. It is not about excess or spectacle, but about having the option when it suits you. And in the end, that is what real luxury looks like.
As for what I would really look forward to next? A masseuse on board. Then we can talk about real relaxation and luxury.
