Zipair Business Class

When I travel with airlines, I generally look out for unique things that one airline has over another. In saying that, it’s generally something positive that I look for, like the companion suite that Qatar recently introduced on their Next Gen QSuites or the in-built headphones on the head rests onboard JAL’s A350 new product.

Even the heating and cooling of seats on board the new Lufthansa Allegris is extraordinary. Sometimes, it can even be as simple as those amazing salt and pepper shakers on board Virgin Atlantic. The bidet on board Omans 787-9 is also great. I’m always on the lookout for something distinctive or exceptional.

I could never imagine that the uniqueness of Zipair is actually the lack of pretty much everything other than a full flat seat. Similar to Qantas’s New A321XLR expected to launch in 2025, there are no inflight entertainment monitors!🫢 Let’s check out what else is on offer… or not on offer!

Low Cost Japanese Airlines

Zip Air is a low cost Japanese Airline. It has 8 dreamliners in its fleet and flies to 10 major destinations.

In general terms, Zipair Business Class offers a unique experience for those seeking affordable luxury in the air. The airline, a subsidiary of Japan Airlines, operates with a low-cost model but provides a business class experience that rivals some premium airlines. With Zipair full flat seats, a modern Boeing 787-8 fleet, and convenient routes to several international destinations, Zipair is redefining what budget-conscious travelers can expect from a business class experience.

Zipair Business

Flying with Zipair business class is unlike any other low-cost carrier. The airline operates its Boeing 787-8 aircraft with 18 business class seats, offering a full flat bed configuration, a spacious work table, and a modern reverse herringbone seat layout. Zipair business class is different in its no-frills approach.

Zipair Business does not permit passengers with children under 6 years old. They state that it is for safety reasons.

So you are out of luck if you are travelling with kids under 6.

Each seat includes:

  • Spacious work and dining tables
  • Pop-up armrests
  • Ample storage compartments
  • Charging ports for devices
  • Windows with dimmable controls (but no shades, so pack a shade in case there is bright sunlight).
  • Airvents (but they are not adjustable so they can be quite strong)

Zipair Full Flat

One of the standout features of Zipair business class is its full-flat seat, offering a comfortable sleeping position for longer flights. While the airline doesn’t provide doors for privacy, the angled layout ensures passengers feel a sense of seclusion. The Zipair full flat bed ensures a restful experience, though the air vents might be slightly bothersome due to their fixed angle. Passengers are also provided with a pop-up armrest and a spacious eating table, enhancing the overall comfort.

In-Flight Entertainment and Wi-Fi

Zipair’s business class focuses on a digital-first approach. The airline offers free WiFi, enabling passengers to access a portal featuring:

  • A flight map
  • A limited selection of movies
  • Snack and drink ordering (with inventory updates)
  • Inflight shopping

While convenient, passengers should be aware that in-flight WiFi may experience disruptions, a common issue across even the best airlines.

Food and Amenities

When it comes to dining, Zipair business class passengers can pre-order meals at the time of booking. Some meals are included in the package, but others require an additional payment. Be mindful that availability is limited. Bring your own snacks to avoid disappointment. (Look at the below images of stock limitation. This is for an intended booking in March 2025 and we are in December 2024!)

Blankets and amenities are not provided unless pre-ordered, which is a downside for travelers used to having these items readily available in premium cabins. Zipair business class price is typically lower than what you would pay on traditional full-service airlines. These added costs for amenities can add up.

The Check-In and Lounge Experience

Zipair keeps costs low by skipping the usual business class perks like dedicated check-in counters and complimentary lounge access. While these services can be purchased as add-ons during booking, the lack of included perks may be a dealbreaker for some travelers. If you know someone who is travelling on Zipair, perhaps consider getting them a lounge pass as a Christmas or Birthday gift. Lounge passes make one of the best and unique gifts for the traveller.

Zipair Business Class Price

Zipair business class price is often significantly lower than what you would pay for a similar class on legacy airlines. For example, flights from Tokyo to Honolulu can cost around USD 2,295, including food and amenities or even less without. (see below) Flying with Japan Airlines or Hawaiian Airlines could set you back around USD 4,800 or USD 4,100, respectively. This pricing strategy makes Zipair business class an attractive option for budget-conscious travelers looking for premium features at a lower price point.

No Privacy, but Affordable

Privacy is a key factor for many travelers, and Zipair business class offers a modest approach. While the seats are angled to provide some level of seclusion, there are no doors or partitions to create a fully private space. However, this setup isn’t drastically different from other airlines, such as Cathay Pacific’s or Turkish Airlines’ A350 configurations, which also lack doors in their business class cabins. Even Emirates, known for its luxury, has yet to introduce suites in its business class, including on the highly anticipated Emirates A350, which follows the design of their retrofitted aircraft.

That said, Zipair business prioritizes affordability over extravagant features. For me, privacy isn’t a dealbreaker here. Reviews of Zipair business class often emphasize its value, showcasing a practical balance between cost and comfort, even without the added luxury of private suites.

Tips for Flying Zipair Business Class

Why Did Zipair Change Its Logo and Livery from Z?

Zipair Tokyo was launched in 2018 as a subsidiary of Japan Airlines (JAL) with the goal of providing a cost-effective yet comfortable travel experience. The airline officially commenced operations in June 2020, debuting its first route between Tokyo Narita (NRT) and Bangkok Suvarnabhumi (BKK).

Initially, Zipair’s branding prominently featured the letter “Z” on its tail. However, in 2022, the airline decided to change its logo and livery. The “Z” symbol had become closely associated with Russia’s military actions in Ukraine, gaining negative geopolitical connotations. To avoid any association with the conflict and maintain a positive global image, Zipair opted for a more neutral and inclusive branding approach.

In all honesty I wasn’t a fan of their first branding – it kind of reminded me of Zorro 🫢, so I’m glad they changed it. I still think they could do with better branding though. It still looks somewhat dated and something out of the 70’s.
