Lufthansa Allegris

Every time an airline releases a new product, I am always on the lookout to see at least one unique feature—or something I have not seen on another airplane before. For example, Qatar Airways’ New Generation QSuites introduced the companion suite, allowing two people to sit together in window suites that face each other, instead of being limited to middle seats in the business class cabin. This clever design enables better interaction while maintaining privacy. On board Japan Airlines’ (JAL) new A350, the introduction of speakers built into the headrest, is a feature I have never before seen on any aircraft. Say goodbye to bulky headphones, especially when you’re lying down.

And now, with Lufthansa’s Allegris, there’s another innovative touch that gets my thumbs up: the cooling and heating function built directly into the seat. (I will show you below.)

This is what true innovation in aviation looks like—addressing passenger comfort in entirely new ways.

Let’s dive into the features of the long-anticipated Lufthansa Allegris.

What is Lufthansa Allegris?

Lufthansa is redefining the long-haul travel experience with its new concept, “Lufthansa Allegris.” This revolutionary upgrade spans across all travel classes—Economy, Premium Economy, Business, and First Class—offering a level of comfort and variety in seating options that sets a new benchmark in the industry.

Over 80 new Lufthansa Group aircraft, including the Boeing 787-9, Airbus A350, and Boeing 777-9, will feature the innovative Allegris long-haul cabin design. Additionally, Lufthansa’s existing fleet of Boeing 747-8s will be retrofitted to include the new Allegris product. That’s literally breathing new life into the Queen of Skies.

The First Class Allegris experience will be on Lufthansa’s newly delivered Airbus A350 aircraft. This marks a significant enhancement to the airline’s entire travel offering, as the Allegris upgrade brings state-of-the-art features to every class. As part of the Lufthansa Group’s largest-ever investment in product and service innovation, the company is dedicating 2.5 billion euros by 2025 to elevate passenger comfort and convenience across its fleet.

Why you should know the aircraft you’ll be flying.

Understanding the aircraft for your upcoming journey is key to making the most of your travel investment, especially when flying in premium cabins like business or first class. The type of aircraft can greatly influence your comfort, amenities, and overall experience. I learned this the hard way during a 2007 trip to Europe with Emirates. I splurged $14,500 on a first-class ticket, expecting the luxurious flat-bed seats and modern amenities showcased on their website. To my dismay, I ended up on an older Airbus A340-500 with outdated recliner seats, far from what I had envisioned.

Meanwhile, my business partner, who had cleverly transferred Amex points to Emirates to book a reward ticket, enjoyed the latest first-class suite—cutting-edge and unmatched at the time. That trip taught me an invaluable lesson: always check the aircraft before booking. When you’re flying long-haul, like the 21-hour journey from Australia to Europe, and investing a significant sum in tickets, knowing what to expect isn’t just helpful—it’s essential.

Which Lufthansa Aircrafts will feature the Allegris?

Lufthansa Allegris Cabin Availability

Lufthansa is gradually rolling out its new Allegris cabin across its fleet. Here’s the current status of aircraft equipped with the Allegris product:

Boeing 787-9: The first delivery was expected in 2024 but has been delayed.

Airbus A350: 6 aircraft with more scheduled for delivery in the coming months.

Lufthansa Allegris on the Boeing 787-9 – Departing from Frankfurt

The Lufthansa Allegris experience will be available on the Boeing 787-9, featuring a seating configuration designed for enhanced comfort:

  • Business Class: 28 seats, including 4 suites
  • Premium Economy: 28 seats
  • Economy Class: 231 seats, with 34 offering extra legroom
  • Total Capacity: 287 passengers

This product is set to launch on flights departing from Frankfurt (FRA) once Lufthansa receives its new Boeing 787-9 aircraft. However, certification delays for the Allegris cabin on this jet have postponed its rollout.

Lufthansa Allegris on the Airbus A350-900 – Departing from Munich

Lufthansa’s Airbus A350-900 fleet, operating out of Munich, will feature the Allegris cabin with the following configurations:

  • First Class: 3 private suites, accommodating up to 4 seats

  • Extra Space Seats: Available in 3E, 5F, 9E, and 11F—though these may feel restrictive as the bottom part of your body feels like it is enclosed in a box.
  • Premium Economy: 24 seats
  • Economy Class: 201 seats, with 22 featuring additional legroom
  • Total Capacity: 267 passengers

Currently, all Allegris-equipped Airbus A350s are based in Munich (MUC), meaning these upgraded cabins are only available on routes to and from Munich. Once Lufthansa receives its Boeing 787-9s, Allegris is expected to expand to flights departing from Frankfurt (FRA).

It is however understood that delays have impacted the timeline.

When Will Lufthansa Allegris be available?

It is available. Here are the routes on board the A350:

Easy. Lufthansa lets you know when you search for your flight. It has an extremely user friendly booking process which is totally transparent. They walk you through it with clear and concise information including photos.

Here’s a screenshot of what that looks like. In addition to this you get to select your seat when going through the booking process. Take note of the seat map (below).

Lufthansa Allegris Business Class

Lufthansa Business Class introduces private suites designed to offer enhanced comfort and privacy, with walls and sliding doors. These suites provide travelers in the front rows with more personal space, featuring a 27-inch monitor, ample storage, and a wardrobe. Each suite also includes a personal minibar, and the suites can be connected for couples or business partners traveling together, allowing for greater privacy.

Business Class passengers can now choose from six different seat options. An extra-long bed measuring 2.20 meters, (thats almost as big as the 89 inch on board Oman Airs 787-9). There is additional space and a larger work area, a seat with a baby bassinet, or a seat by the window. There’s also a double seat option, where the center console retracts, transforming it into a shared reclining surface.

The Five Business Class Seating Options

  1. Suites in the First Row: Double suite in the middle and single suites by the window.
  2. Extra-Space Seat: Spacious single seat with an extended work surface.
  3. Window Seat: Offers a high degree of privacy.
  4. Seat with Extra-Long Bed: An extended bed length of 2.20 meters for extra comfort.
  5. Classic Business Class Seat: All seats are directly accessible from the aisle.

Lufthansa Allegris Premium Economy

The redesigned Premium Economy Class, launched in spring 2022, brings an elevated travel experience. The “Allegris” seat offers extra legroom, a fold-out leg rest, and a greater reclining range compared to the previous model. Furthermore, this new design features a hard shell that prevents reclining from disturbing passengers in the row behind.

Qantas for example has decided to opt for the traditional recline in their premium economy cabin on board their new A350 Project Sunrise. The Allegris premium economy seat is similar to the one onboard JALs A350.

The table and monitor remain in place, ensuring a stable and comfortable environment throughout the flight. In addition, Premium Economy passengers are provided with a travel amenity kit made from sustainable materials, further enhancing their experience.

Lufthansa Allegris Economy

Lufthansa Allegris Economy Class now offers increased seat pitch (79 cm), tablet holders, USB ports, and added comfort in the first rows, which feature a generous 86 cm of seat pitch.

What’s more, passengers also have the option to book an extra seat next to them (a vacant middle seat) for additional space and comfort. Pretty neat.

Lufthansa Allegris Cooling & Heating of Seats

Lufthansa’s Allegris cabins introduce a game-changing feature: individually adjustable heating and cooling for seats in both Business and First Class. This innovation allows passengers to personalize their seating temperature for optimal comfort throughout the flight. Whether you prefer a cozy warmth or a cooler seat, this feature ensures a tailored experience that caters to individual preferences, enhancing relaxation and sleep quality during your journey. I absolutely love this feature.

Lufthansa Allegris Business Class: The beds are up to 2.20 meters long.

Lufthansa Allegris First Class: With up to 3.7 square meters, the First Class Suites are among the largest in the world.
